Interface Magnetism in Heteroepitaxial Complex Oxide Films

Complex oxide materials host many interesting collective phenomena in condensed matter physics, such as high-temperature superconductivity, various forms of magnetism and ferroelectricity, as well as phase competitions between these states. Recently, it has become possible to create heteroepitaxial complex oxide films with atomic precision, and such structures are of keen interest because modified bonding at the interfaces can give rise to fundamentally new phenomena and valuable functionalities.

A myriad of intriguing phenomena have been discovered, including emergent magnetic behaviors and exotic superconducting and ferroelectric phases. In particular, induced interface magnetization is commonly observed at complex oxide epitaxial interfaces; however, much less attention has been given to its effects on the electric transport properties.

Here I highlight our work exploring the non-trivial effects on the magnetotransport properties from interface magnetization at the layered cuprate and manganite interfaces, in superconducting spin switches [1] and magnetic tunneling junctions [2].
