Optimize Engine Combustion FAST: With VERIFI
Argonne National Laboratory recently launched Virtual Engine Research Institute and Fuels Initiative (VERIFI). The idea of VERIFI stems from our ability to simulate in-cylinder engine combustion processes using high-performance computing tools. This enables us to perform engine simulations with high-fidelity and low/acceptable wall-clock times.
VERIFI will be a forum for industry to collaborate with Argonne, and together solve problems of mutual interest. The presentation will highlight Argonne’s key strengths in simulating in-cylinder combustion processes (using computational fluid dynamics tools) which include: in-nozzle flow, fuel spray, turbulence, combustion, emissions, cyclic-variability, low temperature combustion concepts, etc.
These high-fidelity robust simulation approaches are computationally demanding, hence, the need for simultaneous development of super-computing tools will be highlighted. A recent capability which we have also added is uncertainty quantification on engine processes, which enables us to further improve the reliability of the calculations. The benefits of collaborative efforts with x-ray diagnostics (at APS), engine diagnostics (at ES), CSE, MCS, and ALCF will be emphasized.
