Optimizing Strategic Transportation for the Department of Defense

For many years the United States Transportation Command of the Department of Defense has been using software developed by the DIS division and its collaborators to support making decisions in the effective and efficient worldwide transportation of U.S. military units, supplies, and sustainment. A current collaborative research and development project is modifying the software's planning algorithms to make use of optimization. This brief review of the R&D project outlines the contributions DIS has made to the project and discusses three optimization technologies that were explored as part of the project. The specific technologies discussed include network optimization (based on mixed integer-linear programming), constraint programming, and cross-entropy optimization.
