An Overview of the Integral Molten Salt Reactor
Abstract: Molten salt reactors (MSRs) offer much as future Gen IV commercial reactors. Many of the benefits, including economic, stem from a strong and inherent safety case. Strongly negative power coefficients, liquid fuels enhanced ability to shed decay heat, low-pressure operation without chemical driving force, and the nonvolatility of cesium and iodine also give a safety case that is also more easily grasped by the public This talk will overview the historic development and choices going into the Integral Molten Salt Reactor (IMSR) design. The IMSR strives to simplify the MSR concept to minimize development time and maximize commercial practicality in order to enhance the world’s nuclear power options for combating climate change.
