Performance and Safety Features of the Westinghouse Small Modular Reactor
Dr. Charles L. Kling has been a member of the Nuclear Division of Westinghouse Electric Company for over forty years. He has been involved with safety & licensing and advanced plant designs.
In this talk, he will describe the latest design of the Westinghouse small modular reactor (SMR). This innovative design will produce about 225 MW(e) and about 800 ME (th). The entire reactor can be manufactured in a factory, and shipped to a reactor site by barge or rail.
All of the primary components, such as the pressurizer, the steam generators, and the primary coolant pumps are located inside the reactor vessel. The SMR design employs many of the passive safety features found on the AP 1000 design. Dr. Kling will discuss many of the innovative performance and safety features of this new reactor.
