Abstract:
We are investigating the genome diversity and genetics of the common foodborne human pathogen Salmonella. Closer inspection of the evolution and phylogenetic structure of this diverse species will help us to understand how the genetic differences between isolates of this species impact on survival strategies of the bacterium. In addition to these evolutionary studies, we are also developing genetic methods to efficiently screen fitness phenotypes of mutants. In our approaches we focus not only on mechanisms of animal infection but a lso seek to characterize the interaction of Salmonella with the host microbiome and the bacterium’s survival mechanisms outside animal hosts.
