Abstract:
Epitaxial interfaces between perovskite transition-metal oxides have been the focus of an enormous amount of research because of their novel properties and potential for integration with silicon based technologies. Although strong spin- orbits effects has been invoked to explain unusual magneto-transport properties in these materials, an understanding of their origin has been lacking. In this talk I will develop a tight-binding model for the t2g electron gas that forms near the surface of the prototypical perovskite system, SrTiO3, when strong electric fields are present and discuss how electric field mediated changes in the metal oxygen bonding network lead to Rashba interactions.
