Abstract: Redox-flow batteries are a promising technology for energy-intensive grid storage, but further cost reductions are need for ubiquitous adoption. While recent research has primarily focused on the identification of new redox chemistries, understanding the critical relationships between material properties and overall battery price is key to enabling systematic improvements.

Here, I will discuss the use of techno-economic modeling as a guide for application-informed fundamental science with a focus on specifying property requirements for future materials, addressing key technical hurdles, and, hopefully, motivating new research avenues for the energy storage community.
