Fellowships, Appointments and the Postdoctoral Experience
Early career STEM professionals may join Argonne as Distinguished Fellows or Divisional Postdoctoral Associates.
Distinguished Fellowship Program
Candidates from all scientific and engineering disciplines whose interests are aligned with Argonne’s mission and programs are encouraged to apply. Fellows make major contributions to Argonne’s mission and spearhead new research initiatives to help meet program goals. There are two distinguished fellowships:
- Argonne Named Fellowships – These are the lab’s most prestigious fellowships and are named after scientific and technical luminaries. Named Fellows work closely with an Argonne sponsor to pursue their research interests. A Named Fellow is hired as an Argonne Scholar with full benefits, a competitive salary and a stipend for research support. Named Fellows may renew their appointments on an annual basis for up to 3 years, with the possibility of retention.
- Director’s Fellowships – Director’s Fellowships are granted to outstanding scientists and engineers who show potential for being leaders in their fields. Director’s Fellows make significant contributions to Argonne’s strategic mission through existing programs or by initiating new research areas. A Director’s Fellow is hired as an Argonne Scholar with full benefits and a competitive salary. Director’s Fellowships can be renewed annually for up to two years.
Divisional Postdoctoral Appointments
Divisional Postdoctoral Associates perform research in existing science and technology programs; present and publish research; contribute to the overall research efforts of the Laboratory; advance knowledge in basic and applied research; and strengthen U.S. scientific and technical capabilities. Candidates are selected based on their academic background and possible input to the lab’s research. Initial postdoctoral appointments are for one year with the opportunity to extend up to three years. All postdocs receive a salary and comprehensive benefits.
