Electronics Design and Fabrication

The HEP Electronics Support Group provides electronics engineering, design, fabrication, and support services for a wide variety of research projects at the laboratory.  Historically, the group has been part of the High Energy Physics (HEP) division, providing electronics support for HEP experiments around the world.  Several years ago, we expanded our operations to provide electronics design and support services for the entire laboratory, and outside universities and organizations as well.  The group has significant breadth and depth of experience in electronics engineering, with skills in the following areas:

  • Analog design, including low-noise, high-precision, and high-speed signal processing
  • Digital design, including digital signal processing, programmable logic, embedded processors, memory management, and high-speed communications
  • Power supply design, power systems, and energy conversion, including linear, switching, and high voltage generation
  • Integrated circuit design, including full-custom, mixed signal and radiation tolerant design
  • Communications system, including high-speed copper, gigabit Ethernet, wireless Ethernet, GSM, fiber optic, and free-space optical
  • Instrumentation system design, including large data acquisition systems, trigger systems, power distribution, and grounding
  • Printed circuit board layout, including mixed signal, low-noise, and high-speed design, with auto-routing capability and designs up to 22 layers
  • Fabrication services, including printed circuit board assembly, enclosure construction, cable harnesses, power wiring, and custom mechanical designs
  • Instrument repair, including oscilloscopes, meters, power supplies, monitors, and printers
  • Instrument calibration, including oscilloscopes, meters, and temperature sensors
  • Electrical safety inspections, including repair and mitigation
