Basic Purpose |
| |
Performs innovative research to understand molecular-scale processes associated with the formation of an electrochemical double layer at oxide-water interfaces. Observes the relationship between interfacial structure, cation adsorption, and mineral dissolution rates and processes using synchrotron x-ray techniques and other complementary approaches. Develops innovative experimental apparatus and conceptual approaches for such studies using high-brilliance synchrotron radiation. Interprets experimental data and presents results at scientific conferences and in peer-reviewed literature. |

Knowledge, Skills and Experience |
| |
Considerable Considerable knowledge of interfacial chemistry and materials science; experimental techniques in interfacial chemistry and materials science; mathematical techniques and computer programming for data analysis. Considerable knowledge of high-resolution synchrotron-based x-ray scattering and spectroscopy techniques (including x-ray reflectivity, resonant anomalous X-ray reflectivity, x-ray standing waves, and x-ray absorption spectroscopy) for in situ studies of oxide-electrolyte interfaces. Considerable skill in working interactively and productively in a multidisciplinary environment. Considerable skill in oral and written communication. Considerable record of publication and external recognition in these areas. |
| |
Good Good knowledge of chemical instrumentation and considerable knowledge of interfacial chemistry. Good skill in devising, performing, and evaluating innovative research on fluid-solid interfaces, the use and maintenance of laboratory equipment, and technical communications. Good ability to work independently on a day-to-day basis. Good ability to work effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary research group. |
| |
Other This level of knowledge is typically achieved through a formal education in materials science or interfacial chemistry at the Ph.D. degree level with zero to one year of experience or equivalent in the scientific application of this knowledge and practical laboratory experience. This position may require the ability to travel for work at out-of-state synchrotron facilities and collaborating institutions when required. |
