Argonne National Laboratory

About Us

In our connected world, so many devices and systems rely on understanding electronic behavior.  The work done in Argonne’s Materials Science Division looks at the very foundations of how atoms and electrons arrange themselves and interact to give rise to the properties that underpin the functioning of everything from smartphones to MRI machines. The collaborative work done in the Materials Science Division brings together scientists with world-class expertise who use the laboratory’s state-of-the-art facilities to gain a better understanding and appreciation of the small-scale phenomena that make materials behave the ways that they do.

Through partnerships both at the laboratory and with colleagues from academia and industry, notably at the University of Chicago’s Institute for Molecular Engineering, researchers in Argonne’s Materials Science Division work to understanding material behavior, which is the first step towards the creation of new devices and technologies with broad societal impact.
