Division Director Mathematics and Computer Science Division

Argonne National Laboratory seeks applications from highly qualified candidates for the position of director of the Mathematics and Computer Science (MCS) Division. Argonne is one of the preeminent multidisciplinary research facilities in the country and is a U.S. Department of Energy laboratory managed by UChicago, Argonne, LLC.

With deep expertise in scalable, parallel computing methods, system software, applied mathematics, and numerical libraries, MCS Division researchers create ways to improve the effectiveness of scientists in solving challenging problems. The division has earned top awards, for example, for its development of the MPICH system for parallel message passing, the PETSc library for scientific applications modeled by partial differential equations, and the Globus Toolkit for distributed computing.

MCS researchers also have an impressive track record of spearheading the use of state-of-the-art computers and exploring the requirements of future parallel computers. MCS researchers form multidisciplinary international teams of computational scientists, applied mathematicians, and computer scientists to perform large-scale simulations, using Argonne’s 111-teraflops system for breakthrough visualization and data analytics and the 557-teraflops IBM Blue Gene/P system for solving previously intractable problems at unprecedented scale and speed.

Building on this exciting tradition of excellence, the MCS Division director will have responsibility for guiding the research programs of the division into the exascale era through long-term planning, preparation of initiatives, establishment of policy and priorities, and interactions with funding agencies and the broader academic and laboratory research communities. In addition, the director will develop and maintain an excellent staff, which currently comprises over 100 scientific and technical support staff.

The successful candidate should have a Ph.D. degree in a relevant discipline, an internationally recognized research stature, and demonstrated leadership and administrative abilities with a commitment to excellence in research and operations. Interested candidates should apply online for the position of Division Director #316371 and submit the following for full consideration: CV, research accomplishments, list of publications, major software developed, significant presentations, statement of research interests, and experience in managing large research programs. The position has the possibility of being a joint appointment with the University of Chicago; candidates with an interest in such a position should inform the search committee.
