Laboratory Director

Paul K. Kearns is the Laboratory Director for the US Department of Energy's (DOE’s) Argonne National Laboratory. Prior to this appointment, he was Deputy Laboratory Director for Operations and the Chief Operations Officer for six years. He brings over three decades of management experience to the position, as well as a strong background in science and engineering.

Dr. Kearns came to Argonne from Battelle where he served as President and General Manager of Battelle Italia. He also worked closely with several of the national laboratories on initiatives they led in national security and nuclear energy in cooperation with Battelle Global Laboratory Operations.

He started his career as a safety specialist at DOE’s Chicago Operations Office and completed his DOE career as the Site Office Manager for the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. Then he moved to Pacific Northwest National Laboratory where he served in senior research management roles. From there, he moved to the Idaho National Engineering & Environmental Laboratory where he became the Director of the Laboratory.
