Yi-Wen Chiu

Postdoctoral Appointee

As a multidisciplinary scientist, Dr. Chiu’s main research interests are to understand the coupling and interaction of human and natural systems by applying integrated modeling tools. She has been involved in research related to water footprint and water-energy nexus with broad interests related to scenario analysis and environmental impact assessment. She also participates in several studies aiming to advance biofuels by determining the feasible pathways of achieving water sustainability goals.

Before coming to the United States, Dr. Chiu worked in Taiwan as an assistant researcher for four years. During this time, she published the first textbook in ecological engineering in Taiwan, chaired more than 10 national/international conferences in water management and ecological engineering, and was one of Taiwan’s most active instructors in ecological-engineering training workshops. She also participated in drafting Taiwan’s national mandates in watershed conservation, ecological engineering implementation, and land use planning.

During her graduate school years, Dr. Chiu focused on applying system dynamics models to project future water resource sustainability under different climate, demographic, and energy scenarios. In 2009, Dr. Chiu published a top-accessed article related to bioethanol water footprint in the Journal of ES&T, which eventually led her to Argonne.
