Energy storage-related research by the Institute for Molecular Engineering at Argonne National Laboratory (IME @Argonne) focuses on the following:

  • To address the current fire-safety issues in lithium-ion batteries, IME @Argonne is exploring functional polymeric materials to enable inherently safer lithium battery technologies.
  • Interfaces play a vital role in the performance of batteries. IME @Argonne's goal is to understand how interfaces within the polymer morphology and at electrode-polymer interfaces dictate charge transport and stability.
  • Motivated by the need for next-generation grid-storage technologies, IME @Argonne is interested in exploring redox polymers for flow batteries.
