Nonproliferation & Nuclear Forensics
Argonne is one of the world leaders in nuclear reactor design, fuel processing, radiation detection and radiological forensics. This enormous intellectual resource provides insight into the use and misuse of radiological and nuclear materials and equipment around the globe. Using our expertise, we are striving to strengthen the nation's ability to detect and prevent proliferation of nuclear, radiological, chemical and biological weapons.
Nuclear forensics researchers identify unique chemical and isotopic "fingerprints" in commercial radioactive materials so that if radioactive material is stolen, analysis will lead law enforcement to its origin. More.
Argonne's Nonproliferation Program is limiting the capacity of would-be proliferator nations to pursue programs to develop WMDs. More.
Argonne researchers design, develop, operate and maintain unclassified and classified information systems for national security and nonproliferations programs. More.
Global Threat Reduction Initiative
Argonne has provided technical leadership for the Department of Energy’s efforts toward the minimization of HEU since 1978, with the inception of the program for the Reduced Enrichment for Research and Test Reactors. Today the program is part of the National Nuclear Security Administration’s Global Threat Reduction Initiative (GTRI) Conversion Program. More.
