Small business garners $1.5 million contract thanks to Argonne's help

As part of its technology transfer support to DOE's Office of Environmental Management, Office of Technology Development, Argonne targeted environmental firms that might benefit from participation in technology transfer programs or that might have commercially available technologies for application in DOE's site remediation program.

One of the companies that responded was Waste-Tech, Inc. Waste-Tech had discovered that dewatered-waste cakes pressed with its high-pressure Python^TM press experienced a second dewatering effect about 24 hours after the first. This unusual phenomenon, they said, would give them a competitive edge if they could scientifically verify the mechanism so they could explain it to potential customers.

Discussions and meetings with an Argonne materials scientist, Nestor Zaluzec, gave Waste-Tech the edge it needed to discuss the beneficial secondary effect. As a result, the company has been able to win a $1.5 million contract for its services.

Zaluzec's work at Argonne is supported by DOE's Office of Energy Research, Basic Energy Sciences, Division of Materials Science.
