Simulation: studying piezoelectrics with X-rays and computers


A simulation of the behavior of a zinc oxide nanocrystal when it's excited by ultrafast lasers. The simulation illustrates over time how the crystal deforms (bends, twists, folds, etc.) and how energy is transduced across the material. Understanding such mechanisms on ultra fine scales supports the development of new materials for generating power in small-scale devices.
