Surely, pollination is the most important ecological role played by insectsa service that undoubtedly has an essential effect on the well-being not only of human societies, but also of a large part of the living beings on the planet.
Therefore, the frank regression suffered by pollinating insects is cause for great concern in many sectors, and many research groups around the world are looking for solutions to reverse the situation. It is the case of study carried out in the United States by researchers from the Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois, belonging to the United States Department of Energy, and the Colorado National Renewable Energy Laboratory, whose objective has been to assess the possibilities offered to these insects by the vast tracts of land that lie beneath large-scale solar energy installations.
If those lands, barren today, harbor certain species of plants, could constitute a quality habitat for several species of pollinating insects, andamong them bees and butterflies. Insects, point from the Argonne National Laboratory, sThey are responsible for the pollination of about 75% of the world’s crops, and without them the future would be most fateful. Encouraging their presence in solar plants would increase the yield of surrounding farmers, which would also cause them to willingly approve the installation of this type of infrastructure on adjoining lands.
