Certain limitations at synchrotron sources were overcome using new MEMS technology that manipulates hard X-ray pulses on time scales down to 300 picoseconds.
Significance and Impact
We achieve ultrafast X-ray optics by matching resonator frequency to storage ring frequency, which does not involve the storage ring components, and allows the technique to transfer to other synchrotron sources.
- We fabricated MEMS devices with two comb-drive torsional actuators connected to electric inputs, tuned the resonance frequency (aided by finite element analysis and simulation) by micromachining with a focused ion beam.
- This work used the Novalab focused ion beam in the CNM clean room and APS beamline 7-ID-C for time-resolved x-ray measurements.
