Strategic Trade Control Internship Program

The Strategic Trade Control (STC) program offers graduate students beginning careers in export controls, nonproliferation, counterproliferation studies or national security programs an opportunity to gain experience in threat analysis, international engagement and program development. STC interns will work alongside CSS employees in support of strategic trade control analysis and weapons of mass destruction (WMD) counterproliferation activities.

STC interns are expected to support programs which analyze international networks involved in the illicit procurement of strategically sensitive goods, uncover diversion methods and develop tools to counter these efforts and advance worldwide security.

This work will be conducted in partnership with numerous U.S. government agencies, which include Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration, Department of State and Department of Defense.

Application Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Enrolled in graduate school.
  • Current resume and cover letter as a .pdf file emailed to graduate@​anl.​gov.
  • Two (2) letters of recommendation emailed to graduate@​anl.​gov.
  • An unofficial academic transcript for graduate level coursework.
  • 18 years or older at the time the appointment begins.
  • Pass a background check.
  • Pass a screening drug test.
  • Argonne employees, and certain guest researchers and contractors, are subject to particular restrictions related to participation in Foreign Government Talent Recruitment Programs, as defined and detailed in United States Department of Energy Order 486.1. You will be asked to disclose any such participation in the application phase for review by Argonne’s Legal Department.


A 10 to 12 week summer program (May-September). Exact number of weeks and start date are negotiated with the applicant.


Access to practical, real world projects and training.

Appointees receive an hourly wage which is determined by the hiring division and the Educational Programs Office. Travel reimbursement is determined by the hiring division in accordance with laboratory policy. All travel arrangements must be made by the hiring division in order to receive any reimbursement.


Students are responsible for locating and funding their own housing.
