Position Focus: Network Modernization, Monitoring and Management

Host Division: Business Information Services

Time: Summer

Internship Description:

  • Assist in implementing, enhancing, and maintaining Argonne’s networking services provided to users under the direct supervision of the Laboratory’s network engineering staff.
  • Support of inventory tracking, provisioning work related to initial configuration, and pre-deployment activities.
  • Verification tasks and inclusion in planning activities for work, orchestration of contractors, architectural discussions, etc. will also be part of the role.

Student Requirements:

  • Knowledge of basic networking operation.
  • Familiarity with networking protocols like TCP and IP are a plus.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Class experience with relational databases and java scripting a plus.
  • Completed freshman year of college and maintain a grade point average of 3.0 on 4.0 scale.
  • A desire to participate in a dynamic work environment with competing deadlines.
  • Ability to be highly motivated and self-starting.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Position Focus: Data Center

Host Division: Business Information Services

Time: Summer

Internship Description:

  • Assist in the operation of the laboratory’s enterprise data facilities through learning the software/hardware elements of a data center.
  • Help document the data center environment using Data Center Infrastructure Management software.
  • Assist with deploying and decommissioning IT equipment including hardware installation and cabling.
  • Assist in updating facility documentation at multiple buildings across campus.
  • May assist in deploying and configuring data center devices for data collection and integration into data center software.

Student Requirements:

  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Completed freshman year of college and maintain a grade point average of 3.0 on 4.0 scale.
  • A desire to participate in a dynamic work environment with competing deadlines.
  • Ability to be highly motivated and self-starting.

Position Focus: Data Rationalization/Cleansing

Host Division: Business Information Services

Time: Summer

Internship Description:

  • Assist Service Asset and Configuration Manager with identifying inconsistencies between different databases and helping normalize the data into a central view within the Service Now platform. Identify key views of data and based on skill set help create the views. This will include meeting with customers to review data.
  • Dependent on skill set, the intern may interview, gather requirements, and create request forms for new items to add to the central database view.
  • Working with the Service Asset and Configuration Manager  define standard software and hardware models within the Service Now platform.
  • Create relationships between database elements under the direction of the Service Asset and Configuration Manager.
  • Build dashboards and reports around data using Servicenow platform.
  • Assist with the implementation of data governance with Service Now.

Student Requirements:

  • Class experience with relational databases and java scripting a plus.
  • Completed freshman year of college and maintain a grade point average of 3.0 on 4.0 scale.
  • Submit a completed application and two letters of recommendation.

Position Focus: Precision Machining, Welding and Fabrication Projects

Host Division: Nuclear Waste Management

Time: Summer

Internship Description:

This team collaborates with all personnel to accomplish Argonne’s mission safely by offering the following services:

  • Assist manufacturing and welding engineers and other professionals with precision machining.
  • Assist with welding and model fabrication work planning, design, and execution.
  • Will be exposed to the inner workings of work conceptualization, design, materials selection, production step planning, and execution on a variety of high tech and low tech work.
  • Assist engineers and managers with duties and learn both the technical and managerial aspects of working in the machine tool industry.

Student Requirements:

  • Completed freshman year of college and maintain a grade point average of 3.0 on 4.0 scale.
  • Majors: Environmental Management, Natural Science, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Engineering (Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical, Nuclear), Math, Computer Science.
  • A desire to participate in a dynamic work environment with competing deadlines.
  • Ability to be highly motivated and self-starting.

Position Focus: Content Management

Host Division: Communication & Public Affairs

Time: Summer

Internship Description:

  • This role will touch many areas within the organization, including internal communications and application/service teams to help the intranet effectively communicate the collaborative nature of work at Argonne.
  • Assist the digital communications team in migration of content and assets from Argonne’s current intranet into its new system using Drupal content management system (CMS).
  • Assist with organizing, gathering assets, rewriting, and assembling content within the CMS.
  • Assist with content review with stakeholders to ensure content and assets have been migrated effectively and revise approach (where needed) based upon feedback gathered in review sessions.

Student Requirements:

  • Experience with content management systems such as Drupal and WordPress.
  • Class experience with relational databases and java scripting a plus.
  • Completed freshman year of college and maintain a grade point average of 3.0 on 4.0 scale.
  • Majors: Content Management, Digital Communications.

Position Focus: Service Request Catalog

Host Division: Business Information Services

Time: Summer

Internship Description:

  • Assist the Lead Service Now Developer with the creation of catalog requests using established standards 
  • Follow documented processes for Argonne’s release and change processes around code development.
  • Assist the Lead Service Now Developer in capturing requirements and workflows associated with the request. 
  • Work with the Service Asset and Configuration Manager to define standard software and hardware models within the Service Now platform.

  • Completed freshman year of college and maintain a grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
  • A desire to participate in a dynamic work environment with competing deadlines.
