Vehicles are complex systems with multiple power sources (such as an internal combustion engine and battery), multiple power conversion components (such as the motor and gearbox) and must satisfy numerous safety and comfort constraints, under various environmental constraints (such as temperature or grade). At Argonne, we explore how to control all these variables to make cars and trucks as energy-efficient as possible.
Furthermore, vehicles are increasingly intelligent, connected and automated. We research how to leverage data about the surroundings, the driver and of the overall trip to make each vehicle ride optimal from an energy point of view. We also investigate multi-vehicle cooperative control.
- Development of heuristic control algorithms for vehicles with advanced technologies (hybrids, plug-in hybrids, etc.), including thermal aspects
- Reverse-engineering & analysis of production vehicle control strategies from vehicle testing data
- Control and energy optimization of connected and automated vehicles, including cooperative cruise-control, platooning, intelligent intersection approach, and self-driving
- Statistical learning, horizon computation and prediction for optimal control (as in route-based control)
