Argonne’s Energy Justice Webinar on GREET Bioenergy Life-Cycle Analysis

Please join us to learn more about how Argonne’s GREET life-cycle analysis model addresses energy and environmental effects of bioenergy technologies and identifies opportunities to improve decarbonization.

The Biden Administration established the Justice40 Initiative that directs 40% of the overall benefits of certain Federal investments to flow to disadvantaged communities. Bioenergy such as renewable hydrocarbon fuels for on-road heavy-duty trucks, aviation, marine, and rail can be produced from converting biomass and waste materials, which are grown and available typically in rural areas, via a variety of conversion strategies. Life-cycle analysis (LCA) has been a pivotal method to evaluate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of biomass production, waste management and valorization, as well as renewable fuels and their emission reduction potential relative to fossil fuel incumbents.

Argonne has developed the Greenhouse gases, Regulated Emissions, and Energy use in Technologies (GREETLCA model to address energy and environmental effects of bioenergy technologies consistently and holistically. Argonne has continued to develop new modules in the GREET model to conduct LCA of bioenergy technologies and identify opportunities to improve promising technologies for decarbonizing the transportation and agriculture sectors. Through these research and analysis efforts, Argonne continues to support the Department of Energy’s Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO) and a diversified bioeconomy community in research, development, and demonstration to enable the sustainable use of domestic biomass and waste resources to produce biofuels and bioproducts.

The goal of this webinar is to:

  • Engage a broad, diversified bioeconomy community and demonstrate the GREET LCA capabilities to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion via dissemination of bioenergy LCA capabilities, tools, knowledge, and results
  • Introduce GREET bioenergy LCA and how it can help quantify environmental impact
  • Introduce and demonstrate new GREET modules, including an aviation module and an interactive LCA module, to quantify environmental impacts of bioenergy technologies
  • Learn how Argonne bioenergy LCA activities could continue to serve a broad, diversified bioeconomy community in developing and/or deploying bioenergy technologies
