Material Informatics in Industry

DSL Seminar

Abstract: Designing new materials with informatics-driven approaches is an exciting field that has shown great promise. In particular, there has been extensive work that relies on using in silico material modeling techniques in combination with machine learning and artificial intelligence algorithms to design new materials. However, the ability to go from material chemistry to process and ultimately to a desired property remains a challenge. In this talk, I provide an overview of where such methods are within the glass manufacturing industry and the challenges and opportunities that remain.

Bio: Venkatesh Botu is a senior research scientist within the Modeling and Computational Sciences directorate at Corning’s research and development facility. He leads in materials informatics and product development for laminate glasses. Botu obtained his Ph.D. degree in chemical engineering from the University of Connecticut.
