Next-Generation Batteries: Challenges and Opportunities

Materials Science Colloquium

Abstract: Energy storage is at the center of transformative change in the electricity grid for greater reliability and resilience and for integration of renewable wind and solar electricity as primary power source; in transportation with electric and autonomous personal cars, delivery vans, and long-haul freight trucks; and in electric flight for air taxis, package delivery, and short-haul passenger service. The variety of these emerging uses requires a diversity of next-generation batteries purpose-designed for specific uses. Several novel use cases and the incremental and disruptive battery technologies that satisfy them will be discussed.
