Recent Advances in the SEM for Turbulent Flow Simulations

Abstract: We present recent developments in application of the spectral element method (SEM) for the simulation of turbulent flows at petascale and beyond. We begin with a brief overview of the SEM as implemented in Nek5000.  We then discuss recent algorithmic advances, including:

  • Efficient FEM-based preconditioners-
  • Nonconforming overlapping domain decomposition
  • Multirate timestepping for for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations
  • SEM-based compressible Navier-Stokes solutions
  • Nonlinear stabilization
  • High-performance GPU implementations
  • Reduced-order models
