MCS Researchers Give Invited Presentations at Co-Design Workshop in China

Pete Beckman and Franck Cappello gave invited presentations at the Third International Workshop on CO-DESIGN (Collaborative Development of Simulation Software of Next Generation), held in China on October 29-31, 2013.

Beckman, director of the Exascale Technology and Computing Institute, spoke on extreme-scale computing and big data codesign challenges. Beckman was also on the workshop steering committee for numerical algorithms and software.

Cappello, co-director of the INRIA-Illinois Joint Laboratory on Petascale Computing and project manager of Research on Resilience at the Extreme Scale at Argonne, spoke on computer science challenges in extreme-scale climate modeling.

Codesign involves the collaboration of hardware designers, computer scientists, applied mathematicians, and computational scientists in addressing the scientific and technological challenges raised as we move toward the exascale. The CO-DESIGN workshop focused on the new algorithms and software that will be needed in order that applications can exploit the capabilities of the emerging architectures.
