Theme IV: Competing Spin, Charge and Lattice Correlations

For this theme, we investigate a variety of emergent phenomena that are associated with the simultaneous presence of subtle short-range ordering motifs in the spin, charge and lattice degrees of freedom.

The emergent phenomena under study include metal-insulator transitions, electric control of magnetism, multiferroicity and high-temperature superconductivity.

Single-crystal diffuse X-ray scattering measurements from two samples of MoxVO2, both showing a sharp transition in the transport properties, reveal that short-range structural correlations are important to understand the transport properties.
