Did You Know?
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) organizes regional and interregional training courses and supports fellowships in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy and technology in cooperation with its Member States for scientists and engineers from developing countries.
Opportunity
Successful promotion of the peaceful uses of nuclear energy and technology goes hand-in-hand with efforts in creating education and training programs that engage all segments of society, especially women and youth. IAEA Programs at Argonne commit to raising awareness and promoting science to women and youth through its training opportunities.
Solution
Since 1976, over 200 joint US-IAEA training courses have been organized by IAEA Programs at Argonne, with over 5,000 individuals from 140+ countries participating. Each year, the program hosts 12-15 training courses in a variety of fields related to the peaceful uses and applications of nuclear energy and technology.
Since 2003, more than 1,400 fellowships in the U.S. have been administered by IAEA Programs at Argonne. This work includes finding appropriate host institutions, arranging suitable study and raining programs, and assisting in issuing visas.
Results
Fellowship assignments include hands-on experiences that demonstrate great value for beginner level staff, allowing them to return to their institutions with a great deal of practical knowledge and tools.
Training courses are ideal for senior staff and specialists who need to either develop specialized skills or broaden their qualifications, which strengthens their capacity to implement and disseminate fundamental concepts in their home countries.
