Dr. Karolina Michalska completed her PhD in Chemistry in 2007 at Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznan, Poland. She joined Argonne in 2010 as a postdoctoral appointee at Midwest Center for Structural Genomics and Structural Biology Center. Currently she is an assistant protein crystallographer at Biosciences Division and a fellow at the University of Chicago Computation Institute.
The primary interest of Dr. Michalska is structural biology with a focus on structure – function relationships in biochemical transformations. Among other proteins, she studies several classes of enzymes involved in hydrolysis (glycosidases, amidases, proteases) of various compounds. Recently she has been working on unique proteins encoded in the genomes of Archaea that play a vital role in carbon cycling in marine sediments.
