We are passionate about our work and community. Argonne pairs curiosity with a sleeves-rolled-up work ethic, and we’re proud of the fact that Chicagoland is our home. We actively extend Argonne’s capabilities and resources to disadvantaged communities, and we are committed to building the workforce of the future.

We are united. We pursue discovery together, and our Core Values underpin everything we do. Each of us drives the mission forward, and we celebrate success as one Argonne team. What was that ‘aha’ moment that made you realize this was the career path for you?

I had my “aha” moment when I first started doing research as an undergraduate. I spent months working on a project and the experiment finally worked. That immense satisfaction and pride continues to motivate me even today.

What advice would you give a young person to inspire and encourage her/him in their own educational or professional journey?

The one thought that works for me and I think may be helpful to anyone starting new, is to begin from basics and build on it to solve complex problems.

Maria K. Chan

Scientist, Nanoscience
If someone was interested in exploring your line of work as a career, what is one piece of advice you would give them?

I would say learn to fail. Seek out challenges and try things that seem way too difficult. When you fail, dust yourself off and try again. Resilience is the key ingredient in becoming a scientist.

Senior Nuclear Chemical Engineer
What is the best professional advice you’ve received?

If you are going to study something, no matter what it is, strive to be the best in the world at it.
