Abstract

This paper aims to exploit the fuel saving potential of a passenger car in cruising scenarios by deriving an optimal periodic control strategy based on Pontyagin’s Minimum Principle. Gear shifting and coupling between the engine and the driveline are explicitly included in the optimal control problem, and this leads to a hybrid system. By investigating the analytically derived optimal trajectory in the state space, we confirm the optimal periodic control. Considerable advantages in fuel economy up to 4.8% compared to conventional steady control are demonstrated.
