Transportation Energy Equity Analysis and Resources

Transportation is essential to all Americans, but access and affordability remain out of reach for some. Argonne analysts provide tools and expertise to help stakeholders develop equitable and clean mobility options.

Transportation connects people to jobs, family, healthcare, shopping, and more. Access and affordability, however, are not equitable. When mobility—the very capability that enables access to job opportunities and other necessities—is limited, disadvantages compound rapidly for those affected.

To address these problems, Argonne analysts examine the intersection of energy and advanced transportation and mobility technologies. In addition to expertise in alternative fuels, vehicle life-cycle analysis, and the employment impacts of installing advanced fueling infrastructure (such as electric vehicle charging equipment), the group analyzes the costs and environmental benefits of transportation technologies and modes of mobility. Additionally, Argonne’s in-depth analysis includes quantifying—for all U.S. census tracts—the following:

  • Transportation energy burden (e.g., percentage of household income spent on transportation energy [fuel])
  • Transportation accessibility (e.g., number of necessities and amenities accessible within a given travel time by driving, transit, or walking)
  • Cost of vehicle ownership ($/mile)
  • Transportation emissions (e.g., ozone and particulate matter)

Argonne performs analysis that supports the federal agencies’ environmental and energy justice priorities. The lab’s capabilities and tools enable transportation stakeholders and decision-makers—from the federal to the local level—to work toward affordable and clean transportation for everyone.

Geospatial Energy Mapper (GEM

Geospatial Energy Mapper is a comprehensive online mapping tool that helps to identify areas across the U.S. that are suitable for wind, solar, and many other energy-related projects.

GEM also supports planning locations for electric vehicle (EV) charging stations using siting factors like density of existing EV charging stations, proximity to a designated EV corridor, substation proximity, annual average vehicle traffic, distance to mass-transit hubs, and many different demographic factors.

ATRAVEL

A two-pronged tool serving both individuals and transportation project planners, ATRAVEL helps users assess cost, travel time, and GHGs for various mobility options. ­­­ With the Trip Tool, users input location and recurring travel patterns to compare cost, travel time, and environmental impact for vehicle ownership vs. other options such as transit and ride hail. With the Metric Tool, local agencies can develop regional averages and compare metrics for a number of transportation-related parameters at the census tract, zip code, state, and national levels.
