Argonne OutLoud: Nuclear Energy and Technology–From 1942 to the 3rd Millennium

December 2017 marks the 75th anniversary of the world’s first artificial nuclear chain reaction, which was achieved under the viewing stands of the University of Chicago’s original Stagg Field at the direction of Enrico Fermi, Argonne’s first director.

That major scientific feat precipitated the development of nuclear power plants that have electrified millions of homes, businesses and factories around the world. Though decades old, nuclear energy’s story is beginning a new chapter.
