National Virtual Climate Laboratory

NVCL
The National Virtual Climate Laboratory (NVCL) is a comprehensive web portal for climate science projects funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science’s Biological and Environmental Research (BER) program.

The NVCL is a portal for those working on the climate crisis, such as researchers, students, faculty, and other interested organizations. Portal users can find a wide range of national laboratory experts, programs, projects, activities, and user facilities that are engaged in climate research across the BER portfolio.

NVCL Objectives

  1. Centralize access to DOE climate research

Offer a well-curated, easily accessible, plain-language inventory of BER projects related to climate research and user facilities. The portal content is updated regularly.

  2. List related opportunities

Provide students, faculty, and research scientists access to internship, educational, and training opportunities at DOE and participating DOE laboratories. Opportunities provide coaching and mentoring in the skills they need to ensure success in their careers.

  3. Encourage collaborations

Facilitate robust, self-sustaining collaborations between national laboratories and interested organizations, including colleges and universities that serve underrepresented students such as Minority-Serving Institutions (MSIs) and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

Research Categories

Climate research in BER includes atmospheric processes, terrestrial ecosystem processes and hydrological cycling, and environmental and Earth system modeling. BER also supports major long-term projects, including a strong focus on Earth system modeling and uncertainties in model predictions. BER’s climate-related research projects are listed in the following categories on the portal:

Visitors may also browse a list of all research projects, as well as search and filter the list based on text, type, and national laboratory.

NVCL Features

The portal aims to build a next-generation climate workforce. It is a one-stop shop for students, faculty, and researchers looking for climate jobs and internships at DOE and participating DOE laboratories. Students can find general information about each opportunity with links to additional information such eligibility, how to apply, previous program participants, and contact information. Portal users also have access to information about BER climate-related research projects, past and current funding opportunity announcements, and upcoming application deadlines.

Additionally, NVCL includes a calendar of relevant workshops and events, a glossary, and a news section featuring climate and student news and recent articles featuring work related to the NVCL mission.

Participating Laboratories and User Facilities

DOE national laboratories with climate research included in the NVCL include Argonne, Brookhaven, Lawrence Berkeley, Lawrence Livermore, Los Alamos, National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Oak Ridge, Pacific Northwest, and Sandia National Laboratories.

NVCL also includes three BER-supported DOE Office of Science user facilities: Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM), Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL), and DOE Joint Genome Institute (JGI).
