The Energy Systems Division (ES) at Argonne National Laboratory conducts applied research to develop sustainable innovative technologies to improve the efficiency of resource and energy utilization; to minimize our dependence on imported energy; and to enhance our national security.

While much of our research is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, we also conduct research for other federal agencies and for a wide range of private companies from small start-ups to Fortune 500 organizations.

Our expertise encompasses:

  • Transportation technologies - technology to improve efficiency and reduce emissions from vehicular systems including automobiles, trucks, buses and locomotives
  • Distributed energy systems - technology to improve efficiency and reduce emissions from stationary power sources
  • Process engineering and analysis - transitional and transformational industrial technology to improve resource efficiency, profitability, and competitiveness in a global economy
  • Environmental security science and technology - advanced technologies for detection of chemical and biological species of interest for environmental protection, national security and disease detection
