Creating the Tools of Science

Argonne Open House on May 20, 2023

At Argonne, we work at the cutting edge of many fields of science, from nanotechnology to artificial intelligence. We build huge facilities that power the research of thousands of scientists from around the world every year. Our breakthroughs in scientific discovery lead to materials and technologies that transform your life, from nuclear submarines to the batteries in today’s electric vehicles.

At our 2023 Open House, attendees learned how 3-D printing makes science happen faster and more cheaply and saw a 3-D laser scanner in action. They put themselves in the shoes of a scientist, preparing samples for study and learning how to align components at Argonne’s giant Advanced Photon Source. Visitors of all ages got hands-on to find out how super-powerful magnets power some of the world’s most advanced science experiments.

People visited real-life laboratories, viewing science visualizations in high-resolution on massive screens, interacting with an autonomous robot, and learning what artificial intelligence is and how it’s used every day in many different types of science.

They also toured the lab’s Center for Nanoscale Materials to find out what nanotechnology is and how it is changing science, and took a selfie with Aurora, the newest supercomputer being built at Argonne.
