Working Remotely from Your Argonne Computer

Your Argonne computer should have all of the software mentioned below. If not, or if you encounter problems launching or using certain software programs, please contact the service desk at 630-252-9999, option 2, or submit a service desk request in Vector.

Multifactor Authentication for Microsoft Office 365

Argonne Email and Calendar

Use the installed Outlook client on your Argonne computer; no VPN is required. If Outlook is not installed, use the Outlook Web Client and sign in with your Argonne login and password.

    Microsoft Teams

    If your computer does not have Teams installed, use the Teams web client instead.

    Log in to MyArgonne for more information about Microsoft Teams.

    Using Teams to create an online meeting
    • Open your calendar in Outlook and click on the calendar icon in the lower, left-hand corner.
    • Click New Event near the top left and fill in your meeting details.
    • In the menu bar at the top, click on the Teams Meeting icon.
    • Click Send.
    Use Teams to Message a co-worker
    • Open your Teams application on your computer.
    • Click on the ​“Chat” tab on the left side of the window.
    • Using the Search bar at the top of the page, type the person’s name you want to chat with.
    • Type your message in the bar at the bottom of the page and click Enter.
    Use Teams to Make a Voice Call
    • Open your Teams application on your computer.
    • Click on the ​“Chat” tab on the left side of the window.
    • Using the Search bar at the top of the page, type the person’s name you want to talk to.
    • Click on the Add People icon on the top, far right and add additional participants if you wish to make a group call.
    • Click on the telephone icon to initiate the call.
    Use Teams to Start a Group Chat
    • Open your Teams application on your computer.
    • Click on the ​“Chat” icon on the bottom of the screen.
    • Using the Search bar at the top of the page, type one person’s name you want to chat with.
    • Click on the Add People icon on the top, far right and add the additional participants.
    • Additional instructions for using Chat and making Teams calls is available.

    Box

    Use Box to store and collaborate on file content

    Use your computer’s web browser to access the following (VPN not required)

    • Argonne Email
      Access to your email, calendar and contacts
    • Box
      Secure cloud-based file storage and collaboration
    • Box Plus
      Security-enhanced cloud based file storage and collaboration
    • Dash
      Access other laboratory applications
    • Dayforce
      Time and project effort reporting
    • Microsoft Office 365
      Web versions of Office applications
    • Microsoft Teams
      Chat and participate in internal video conference meetings
    • MyArgonne
      Access Argonne News and other internal Argonne information and links
    • Password Change
      Change your password
    • Password Reset
      Reset your forgotten password
    • PRISM
      An online management tool used to assist managers in tracking and trending issues and assessments in their business process areas
    • Vector
      Submit and track service support requests
    • Workday
      Employee and financial information and actions

    Some resources are not available through a web browser or Dash. These include remote access to your desktop, third-party systems that can be accessed only from the Argonne campus (e.g., scientific journals, DOE systems), and other resources that not Internet-enabled (e.g., file shares). For these services, you will need use Argonne’s virtual private network (VPN) service.

    Contact the Service Desk to request a VPN account and installation of VPN client software on your computer. The software can be installed remotely.

    Remember to disconnect from the VPN when it is not in use. This will ensure applications that do not require a VPN will be more responsive.
