Led by Argonne National Laboratory, Q-NEXT is a collaboration involving the world’s leading minds from the national laboratories, universities and the private sector, working to advance the state-of-the-art in quantum information science (QIS) and technology and ensure U.S. leadership in this economically crucial arena.

Along with world-leading experts, top-tier facilities and cutting-edge projects, partner institutions bring decades of broad, complementary expertise in areas of QIS that have applications in computing, communications and sensing. This expertise includes quantum information theory, high-performance computation, quantum networks, quantum experimental science, advanced computing and high energy physics.

Advanced characterization of polytypic silicon carbide for quantum technologies

This project aims to realize next-generation platforms for quantum information science based on silicon carbide crystals that are promising theoretically but require development of rational synthesis strategies.

Creating bright single-photon sources on demand

Project researchers created single-photon sources for quantum communication by using nanometer-sized gold tips.

Center for Nanoscale Materials

Design of radio-frequency readout and controls for mid to large quantum information systems

The project will develop and deliver hardware, firmware and software to read out and control a multi-qubit system. The system will query about qubit states and will control qubit errors in real time.

Exploring lossy quantum computation

Quantum computers are subject to inevitable noise processes. A theoretical understanding of noise can help lead to more efficient quantum computations.

Artist’s interpretation of “hypersurfaces” embedded in “noise space.” By combining experiments at different noise rates (spheres) and fitting hypersurfaces to the data (surfaces), Argonne scientists are able to recover “noise-free” quantum information.

Improving performance of quantum optimization by leveraging problem structure

This project addresses crucial obstacles to using quantum computers to outperform classical algorithms in optimization problems. Our insights bring quantum systems closer to being useful for real-world applications.

Photon qubit entanglement and transduction

Our team of experimentalists and theorists is working to overcome grand challenges in quantum entanglement and transduction, aiming at developing a hybrid quantum link between optical and microwave qubits mediated by a spin-based quantum transducer.

Development of a parallel time-dependent quantum systems solvers (open and closed) to accurately model sources of noise in modern quantum devices

Research with Hybrid Quantum Systems at Ultralow Temperatures

The Quantum Matter and Devices Lab in the Center for Nanoscale Materials (CNM) enables comprehensive low-temperature science down to 10 mK with extensive magnetic, electrical and optical capabilities for characterization of a variety of quantum materials
