Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging on Campus

Argonne offers Electric Vehicle (EV) charging ports across the Lemont campus, enabling anyone with campus access to pay for and conveniently charge their personal EVs.

Argonne’s Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

There are 39 EV charging stations with a total of 68 individual charging ports across Argonne’s campus. You can view the location of the ports on this map. 

• Most of the ports (58) on campus are on the Chargie platform, allowing users to initiate and pay for charging. See the ​“Charging at Chargie Ports” section below for more details.
• The 10 ports located at Building 240 (TCS Conference Center) are not owned and operated by Argonne, but instead by CBRE. These ports are integrated with the Loop app to start and pay for charging. See the ​“Charging at Loop App Ports” section below for more details.

*Building 300 also has six DC Fast Charging ports

Charging at Chargie Ports

• Instructions:

  • To start a session:

    • At the charger, plug in your vehicle,
    • Next, scan the QR code on the station.
    • You will then be redirected to the Chargie web interface to enter your phone number, your payment information (credit card, Apple Pay or Google Pay) and start the charging session.
    • You will receive text updates on the status of your session.

    Note: A temporary hold of $60 is used during each charging session to validate your payment card. The hold will be removed once your session is complete.

  • To end charging:

    • Your session will end when your vehicle is charged to capacity, though you can unplug your EV to end your session at any time.
    • Payments are processed automatically at the end of each session.

    Note: Only Argonne fleet vehicles will be able to charge using an RFID tag.

• Fees:

  • Users will be charged a usage-based fee of $0.183 per kWh and a $0.10 per kWh service fee. For example, in a session where you charge 22 kilowatt hours (kWh), you will pay $6.23 (22kWh x ($0.183+ $0.10)).

• Accepted payment methods: 

  • Credit/debit card, Apple Pay, Google Pay

• Important Information:

  • Charging is first-come, first-served. You cannot make a reservation.
  • AC Level 2 charging stations are limited to four hours per session, while the DC fast-charging stations at Building 300 are limited to two hours per session.
  • Payments are processed automatically at the end of each session.

• Tips, Troubleshooting, and Support

  • Plug your vehicle in first, then scan the QR code.
  • If a charger is not responding, refresh your screen or restart your phone and try again.
  • Contact the Chargie program support team through the web interface or the chat function on their website, if you have questions about billing or program cost.
  • For any other questions, contact the Resource Efficiency team.

Charging at Loop App Ports (Building 240 only)

• Instructions:

  • To begin charging:
    • Download the Loop app (App Store | Google Play).
    • Register for an account and set up a payment method.
    • On the app’s home screen, tap the green scan button and scan the QR code on the charger.
    • Plug in the connector to your EV and ​“Swipe to start charging” in the app.
  • To end your session:
    • Press ​“Stop Charging” in the app and unplug.

• Fees: 

  • Users will be charged a usage-based fee of $0.28 per kWh. For example, in a session where you charge 22 kilowatt hours (kWh), you will pay $6.16 (22kWh x $0.28).

• Accepted payment methods: 

  • Credit/debit card, Apple Pay, Google Pay

  • For payment or technical issues (either with charging stations or the Loop app), call 888-385 6671 or email technical support.

• Charging spaces are for active charging only.
• Vehicles should be moved promptly when charging is complete.
• Campus access does not guarantee charger availability.
• Personal extension cords or adapters are not permitted.
• Overnight parking/charging is not allowed except for Argonne fleet vehicles.
