Hao Cai

Group Leader, Materials Life Cycle Analysis

Life-cycle Analysis of Low-Carbon/Carbon-Negative Fuels, Materials, and Product Supply Chains.

Biography

Dr. Hao Cai is leading theMaterials Life Cycle Analysis Group at the Systems Assessment Center (SAC), Energy Systems and Infrastructure Analysis Division at Argonne National Laboratory. This group leads the continuous development and expansion of the GREET suite of models including fuel cycle (GREET1) and vehicle cycle (GREET2) models, and derivative tools such as Feedstock Carbon Intensity Calculator, GREET Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) module, and GREET building module. Dr. Cai’s research focuses on life cycle analysis (LCA) of transportation fuels, including biofuel pathways, waste-to-energy technologies, fossil energy systems such as petroleum, natural gas, and electricity production, climate-smart agricultural practices, sustainable manufacturing, as well as building and construction materials such as cement, insulation materials, and whole buildings. Most of his work contributes to expansion and updates of Argonne’s GREET® LCA model. Dr. Cai has authored over 70 peer-reviewed journal articles and technical reports in the area of transportation fuels, alternative fuel vehicles, agricultural decarbonization, and building materials and whole buildings. His research in the LCA of transportation fuels and vehicle systems has gained extensive exposure to major media such as the Wall Street Journal and professional news media such as the Chemical and Engineering News of the American Chemistry Society, and in DOE Press Release. He is currently serving as a Co-Chair of the Product Category Rule (PCR) Committee of the American Center for Life Cycle Assessment, providing guidance and advice to standardized LCA methodologies. He also serves as a reviewer of prestigious peer-reviewed journals such as Energy & Environmental Science; Journal of Cleaner Production; Energy Policy; Environmental Science & Technology; Biofuels, Bioproducts, & Biorefining, The International Journal of Life Cycle Assessment; ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering, among others.
