Venkat Srinivasan coordinates energy storage activities at Argonne and fosters collaborations between National Laboratories, industry, and academia to translate lab innovations to market impact.

Biography

Venkat Srinivasan is a senior scientist at Argonne and serves as director of the Argonne Collaborative Center for Energy Storage Science (ACCESS) and director of the Low-cost Earth-abundant Na-ion Storage (LENS) consortium. He is also lead for external engagement for the Energy Storage Research Alliance (ESRA). ACCESS encompasses energy storage programs at Argonne and serves as a point of entry for industry, academia, and other laboratories to leverage Argonne’s unique capabilities and facilities. LENS aims to discover, develop, and demonstrate a new class of sodium-ion batteries that match, and aspire to surpass, the specific energy and energy density of current graphite/lithium iron phosphate batteries.

Venkat served as deputy director of the Joint Center for Energy Storage Research (JCESR), from 2012 to 2023, and as director from 2023 to the conclusion of its work in 2024. Venkat is a former staff scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, where he held multiple leadership roles. His research interest is in developing next-generation batteries for use in vehicle and grid applications. Venkat and his research group develop meso- and macro-scale models for battery materials and combine them with experimental characterization to help design new materials, electrodes, and devices.

In addition to his research, Venkat is passionate about creating an energy storage ecosystem in the U.S., bringing together various partners. He worked closely with DOE to create Li-Bridge, which aims to bridge the supply chain gap for batteries. 

Venkat joined the scientific staff at LBNL in 2003 after postdoctoral studies at the University of California, Berkeley and Pennsylvania State University. He received his PhD from the University of South Carolina in 2000. He is an electrochemist by training.
