Research Security Program
Argonne National Laboratory is dedicated to supporting the research community in safeguarding U.S. science and engineering through the implementation of clear, actionable research security policies, procedures, practices, and capabilities. In alignment with the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022 (P.L. 117-167) and National Security Presidential Memorandum-33 (NSPM-33), Argonne has established a comprehensive Argonne National Laboratory Research Security Program.
What is Research Security?
Research security involves safeguarding the research enterprise against threats such as intellectual property theft, integrity violations, and foreign interference. It encompasses a system of controls designed to:
- Protect sensitive information, intellectual property, and technological advancements from misappropriation.
- Ensure the integrity of research findings.
- Maintain a culture of innovation within the research community.
Research security is critical for protecting national and economic security, preserving the integrity of the U.S. research system, and fostering trust and transparency. By protecting against bad actors and the misuse of sensitive information, research security helps preserve the integrity of U.S. research, safeguards researchers’ careers, and defends the nation’s intellectual and economic interests.
