Metal fluoride passivation coating techniques could hinder surface erosion of electrode materials.
Argonne researchers Anil Mane, Jeffrey Elam, and Jason Croy recently patented methods for applying metal fluoride passivation coatings to lithium battery cathodes.
Using atomic layer deposition, which allows precise control over material composition and thickness, these techniques could enhance the conductivity of the metal fluoride coating while maintaining its superb resistance to chemical corrosion. This could help preserve the overall performance of lithium ion batteries.
