Nanofiber components for solid-state batteries

New solid-state electrolytes and electrochemical cells are highly conductive and can be synthesized in real-world manufacturing processes.

A team led by Argonne materials scientist Yuepeng Zhang has patented components for solid-state batteries using a lithium salt, nanofiber lithium-ceramic conductors, and a functionalized polymer matrix. The resulting solid electrolyte and electrochemical cells have enhanced conductivity and interfacial stability.

The materials deliver outstanding electrochemical properties while alleviating problems long associated with solid-state batteries. Zhang and colleagues Sanja Tepavcevic, Peter Zapol, John N. Hryn, Gregory Krumdick, Ozge Kahvecioglu, Krzysztof Pupek, and Michael John Counihan intend for these improved components to make solid-state battery manufacturing more efficient and cost-effective.
