Technical Assistance in Climate Modeling, Resilience and Adaptation

Argonne is a leader in next-generation climate science and modeling and in combining these capabilities with resilience and decision science expertise to inform choices and enable action.

Climate Modeling

  • High-resolution (12 km and higher) regional-scale climate models that evaluate climate change impacts on hydrology and ecology (including agriculture and natural environments), with results better at forecasting seasonal features and extreme weather events than any previous models and added accuracy to climate predictions, especially in places with sharp terrain changes

Emergency and Disaster Analysis

  • Doctrine and guidance development to help federal sponsors develop national preparedness doctrine and develop implementation guidance to enable its adoption nationwide
  • Modeling, analysis, and planning support for preparedness, response, and recovery activities
  • Exercise development and support in the form of designing, developing, conducting, and evaluating discussion- and operations-based exercises to test capabilities
  • Risk and crisis communications support to enhance the effectiveness of crisis communications by bridging the gaps between public affairs practice and social science
  • Specialized subject matter expertise on priority issues such as supply chain resilience, evacuation, dam safety, and community resilience

Infrastructure Science

  • Infrastructure system modeling to simulate system disruptions and their impacts for application in assessments, planning, exercises, and real-world incidents
  • Security and resilience assessment with methodologies that allow public and private sector personnel to evaluate individual assets, broader systems, and entire regions
  • Strategic risk analysis with versatile assessments, ranging from highly technical to foundational frameworks, to enable discovery of infrastructure system interdependencies and critical nodes
  • Disaster response and recovery support to provide federal disaster response partners real-time situational awareness and inform long-term recovery decisions on rebuilding infrastructure

Social, Behavioral, and Decision Science

  • Modeling and simulation to facilitate decision making by applying novel methods for agent-based modeling, complex adaptive system modeling, system dynamics, and complex network analysis
  • Software development to create tools to broaden the applicability of and access to modeling and simulation.
  • High-performance computing resources to build trusted models
