The Journal of Open Source Software: Developing a Software Review Community

CS Seminar Series

Abstract: Software is an essential driver for research in many disciplines. For example, on the Python ecosystem the NumPy package is heavily used for scientific computing and artificial intelligence. Thus, a lot of (open) software is used within the research community to enable high impact research which is published in journals. Looking at academia and partially at national laboratories papers (h-index) and funding are some metrics for promotions. However, getting credit for software development is not common. JOSS tackles this issue.

The Journal of Open Source Software is a developer friendly, open access journal for research software packages. Committed to publishing quality research software with zero article processing charges or subscription fees. This talk will showcase the different submission process from traditional journals. JOSS is turning 10 years soon and we will investigate some data to showcase the success of JOSS.
