Smart manufacturing systems integrate digital manufacturing intelligence in real-time across an entire production operation. Argonne is moving into this space by combining its various strengths (e.g., sensors, analytics, nanotech) to expand digital manufacturing projects into smart manufacturing systems.

Argonne hosts a state-of-the-art Visualization Laboratory that includes immersive visualization (Oculus Rift), Augmented Reality (HoloLens) and 3D printing technologies. The visualization laboratory is currently targeting applications targeting applications in the complex social and physical systems space. The research is supporting components of the Securing Energy and Critical Resources Initiative and the Advanced Manufacturing Initiative, with additional applications in the national security space.
